How To Enjoy Traditional Bolivian Food
Even if you are not a foodie, you will fall in love with the traditional Bolivian food. Bolivian food
recipes are full of flavour and fragrance. Traditional Bolivian food consists of a perfect balance of carbohydrates, proteins and nutrients. Each food is a meal in itself packed with all the basic requirements for the body. In Bolivia, people tend to have not one large meal but six smaller meals throughout the day. Bolivians start their day with a heavy breakfast, followed by a mid morning snack, then a sumptuous lunch (although not as heavy as the breakfast). In between lunch and dinner, Bolivians do have something called tea time snack. Thus, we see their diet is something which is recommended by most dieticians and doctors. Let us have a quick look at some traditional Bolivian food recipes.
Lechón al horno is a very traditional Bolivian food. If you are a health freak and yet a foodie, this is the right choice for you. This Bolivian food recipe contains of pig and potatoes. It is a dish made of roasted suckling pig. This slowly roasted pig is juicy and succulent and is full of flavour. As it is slowly roasted over open fire it gives you that rustic flavour when you eat it.
Humita, also known as humintas, is a very healthy staple diet for Bolivian people. These are something like dumplings but are sweet in taste. Made out of corn flour these dumplings can be prepared by either steaming, boiling or pan frying them. However, they are not steamed, boiled or fried directly but is always wrapped in some kind of leaf – preferably banana leaf or corn husk.
The next great Bolivian dish one should indulge in is Salteña. These are something like pasties. You get a variety of filling to choose from - meat, chicken, vegetable. These fillings are marinated in special spices and then stuffed into the pasty cover. This is really yummy and delicious.
If you are a stew lover then Fritanga is a must try. This is a spicy stew made from pork and a lot of spices are added to it. This dish is heavy and filling and has tomatoes and onions along with the meat. The strong flavour of this traditional Bolivian food comes from the addition of fresh herbs like parsley, cilantro, oregano, garlic and spices like chilli and cumin. You need to have a brave heart for having this stew as it is quite spicy.
Apart from the above mentioned food, you should also try out Changa de pollo, Chincharrón and Charque de llama. These are all meat dishes and very tasty.
You can try the fried lama meat or the tasty chicken soup. Therefore, traditional Bolivian food is very appealing and ready to conquer your appetite.
