How To Eat Tofu?
Tofu, the Japanese version of the Indian “Paneer”, is made by coagulating soy milk and then pressing the resulting curd into soft blocks. While most of us are aware of what tofu is, some of us may still wonder how to eat tofu. The best attribute of tofu is that it can absorb any new flavor through the marinades or spices. This is exactly what makes tofu an all-purpose item that can be eaten in a variety of ways.
Raw Tofu:
Tofu can be easily digested and hence, can be eaten raw and uncooked. You can dice small cubes of tofu and add finely chopped green onions and nori (seaweed) on top of it. Add some soy sauce and enjoy the bowl of health.
You can also eat chilled tofu. Just dice large cubes of tofu and serve them on an ice bed. Dip them into a bowl of hoisin sauce or soy sauce and enjoy eating tofu.
Uncooked, grated tofu is also a great ingredient to go with salads and appetizers. You can also add small cubes of uncooked tofu in soups, stews and noodles to enhance their flavor.
Cooked Tofu:
Tofu has very little flavor of its own and as such absorbs any flavor that is added to it. This makes tofu a multi-recipe item and you can cook tofu in any way you want to. You can mash, blend, whip, grind, crumble, marinade, simmer, steam, bake and broil tofu. The ways and methods can be numerous. Thus, add tofu to any dish and cook it in any way you want to, to create a few unique and exclusive recipes.
Sautéed Tofu:
You can simply sauté or stir fry a few pieces of tofu along with some vegetables to make a great stir-fry recipe. Just add drops of soy sauce or teriyaki sauce and enjoy the healthy snack.
Deep Fried Tofu:
In East and Southeast Asia, one of the common methods of eating tofu is by deep frying them. The most popular dish of fried tofu is aburaage. Thin slices of tofu, deep fried in hot oil, these serve as great tasting bites and snacks.
Pickled tofu:
Pickled tofu is another way of eating tofu. Pickled tofu not only tastes better, it also stays fresh for a longer time. You can eat them individually, or add them to stir fried dishes to enhance their flavor.
Other ways of eating tofu include barbequed tofu, broiled tofu and so on. The list can really be a long one. This is why tofu becomes the ultimate convenience food that comes with great taste. And not just that – it is easily digested, it is cholesterol free, high in protein, and low in sodium and calories. With so many qualities that tofu has, can we still ignore eating tofu?
