How To Eat Pane Toscano
My recent trip to Europe was with a purpose, to step out from the usual paths and taste the unique regional aromas, flavors, and textures – a true Epicurean adventure. It was during this foodie expedition that I got to eat Pane Toscano. When we talk of Italian food, it is always about the pasta and the pizza; however, there is much more to Italian cuisine, and Tuscany “the heart of Italy,” I believe is a treasure trove for any gastronome like me.
The Tuscan cuisine is all about simplicity (very much like the people there) and like their more popular counterpart, pasta is not a staple part of Tuscan cuisine. The meals here typically comprise of cheese, legumes, fresh vegetables and fruits, soup, and of course Pane Toscano – the classic Tuscan bread. Pane Toscana is a white, round shaped bread, with a crispy crust and a soft interior. The bread is unsalted and quite bland, there is nothing much to talk about the taste or flavor of Pane Toscano, but then, I quickly realized, this is for a purpose. You see most of the dishes that the Pane Toscano is eaten with are highly flavored and made up of a range of herbs. The Tuscan bread is not the highlight of a meal, but is used as a clever backdrop, to balance the intense flavors of the cured meat, cheese, pickles, and stews. Without the blandness of the Pane Toscano, one would hardly be able to appreciate the nuances of other flavors.
So, how do you eat Pane Toscano – being so bland the usual butter and jam method seems to be a bit far-fetched. Well, traditionally, the Tuscans have their bread as a meal accompaniment, but the versatile nature of the bread does not allow one to stop at that. Pane Toscano tastes even better when stale. In fact, stale Pane Toscano gives birth to a whole new range of flavors and textures that are absent in the fresh bread. Many Tuscan recipes call for the addition of broken pieces of Pane Toscano to be added to soups, broths, and salads. The most famous among these is the Panzanella salad – a humble bread crumb salad that will enchant you from the first bite.
I took the Pane Toscano recipe back home and tried making it with the ingredients available at my place. This is when I discovered a whole new way of eating Pane Toscano – slice the bread, top it with shredded cheese, chopped peppers, olives, garlic salt, and olive oil – microwave it for 1 min or till the cheese melts, believe me you will fall in love with this dish.
So, these are some of the ways in which you can eat Pane Toscano – the quintessential Tuscan bread. If have tasted Pane Toscano before, then do share the ways in which you would want savor this salt-free delight.
