What is ho mok pla

Ho mok pla is a paté of fresh sea fish which is cooked with fresh spices, egg and coconut milk. This is basically a steamed food item, which is placed in a cup of banana leaf and served just that way. Truly traditional and beautiful, isn’t it? Yes, that’s what Thai cuisine is all about and you get a first hand feel of it when you taste ho mok pla yourself. In a specialty Thai restaurant, you will usually be served this yummy steamed fish delicacy with a rich topping of thick coconut cream.

The ho mok pla is intended to be an appetizer and so, you should eat this food item before you order your Thai main course meal. Though this food can be savored as a snack from any street food stall as you walk the evening by a Thailand beach, it’s also a good idea to savor it as a starter for lunch or dinner. After all, this dish is actually a light custard recipe prepared from curried steamed fish and coconut milk.

How to eat ho mok pla your own way

If you are not a spice loving person as the Thai people are, you can always cook the dish in your European or American way and savor it. You can delete the chilies and the red curry paste from the list of ingredients and simply prepare the dish with the rest of the ingredients like basil leaves, kaffir lime leaves, coconut milk, fish sauce, palm sugar and corn flour. Moreover, if you are fat conscious, you can also avoid adding the coconut cream in the end. The fish is best eaten steamy hot. It looks all the more inviting when you are served the dish in cups made of banana leaves. But, if you are making it at home and do not have banana leaves, you can always savor the dish in ramekins. Trust me, if you get the recipe right, you will like the taste of it no matter what kind of serving dish you use.
