Cut butter

We all have used butter while baking and I am sure most of us know how to cut butter. Here, I am talking about the actual act of cutting butter and mind you, not cutting in butter into flour etc. Cutting butter might come to most of us as an impromptu action that we have not given much thought to. While baking cakes, pastries, biscuits, muffins or while sautéing or stir frying we use butter cut in convenient sizes. Let us see how butter can be cut.

Cutting Butter at Right Temperature                                                                                Cutting butter

Temperature is by far the most important factor while one is planning to cut butter. Butter can be bought from the market as blocks or sticks. These are usually refrigerated and are at a lower temperature. The low temperature makes it hard and hence, does not yield easily to a knife. Butter directly from the freezer of your home should be thawed at room temperature until it is soft yet firm. If it becomes too soft, cutting might not be necessary since it would begin to run into the vessel etc. Hence, cutting it at the right time is of utmost importance while cutting butter.

Cut Butter into Slices and Cubes

Sticks and blocks of butter can be sliced or cut into cubes with a knife or a butter knife. If the butter is soft a butter knife would be sufficient to slice through.

  1. Place butter block on butter tray.
  2. Using a knife or butter knife, make slices of desired thickness beginning from one end.
  3. These slices can be further cut into cubes.
  4. Make lengthwise cuts on the slices.
  5. Now cut the slices crosswise to get cubes of butter.

Grated Butter

Butter is always used according to measurement given in the recipe. Grated butter too can be used in most of the recipes. Rub the butter block on the grater in one direction to get grated butter. The butter should be very firm and cold for grating. Soft butter is best cut.

Once you know how to cut butter using it while cooking would be easy.
