How To Clean Wok
![]()
Thinking about how to clean wok? Cooking with the wok is one of the best ways to cook because there is barely any clean up necessary and wok care is very simple. Remember never to use any harsh detergents that may interfere with the flavors of future cooking. Read on for some great tips and techniques on how to clean this utensil.
Things You Will Need
- A soft sponge for the insides
- A slightly abrasive sponge for the outside
- Kitchen cloth
- Liquid Soap
Guidelines
- Woks made of cast iron or carbon steel are susceptible to getting scratched so wash them by hand with regular water. In case the buildup is stubborn, pour in some soapy water; allow soaking for a few minutes and then washing again.
- Use a soft sponge or a kitchen cloth to clean the inside surfaces of the wok. For the outer surface you can use a slightly more abrasive sponge to get rid of grease stains and food particles.
- To make sure you did a thorough job of cleaning the insides of the wok, run your hand across the bottom to ensure it is smooth and food particle-free.
- Smear a tablespoon of salt lightly and evenly on smudges where stubborn food bits still stick on. Use a soggy sponge to rub the salt and douse the salt off thoroughly when finished.
- Dry out the wok entirely by setting it on the stovetop over low heat. If you air dry the wok on a dish rack it may lead the utensil to rust.
Tips
If your regular cooking wok has been degraded from neglect or any other cause such that normal cleaning does not help and you are about to give it away or trash it, you can improve the wok by re-seasoning it.
Hope cleaning wok techniques were helpful and you will soon have sparkling new woks from now on. Store the steel wok in a dirt free cabinet, and do not store any other items inside it. Following an appropriate cleaning ritual will also help restrict any rust from forming on the steel wok, rendering it unsafe for cooking.
