Even though you might have been cooking for years together, there are time when you put in a little too much salt into the food that you make. A little extra salt can make a dish inedible, and I have seen may people wasting their food or throwing it away just because they couldn't balance excess salt present in the dish.

Here are a few simple tricks you can try, the next time you feel the need to balance excess salt in some dish that you have made. You can start with the potato or celery slices. Just put some of these into the dish that you are making and let them cook for a while, these will balance excess salt. Incase you feel that the presence of these two items might spoil the look of the dish, just fish them out before serving and after the balancing excess salt is all done.

You can also pour some more water or salt free broth into the cooking pot as this will help in balancing excess salt. Adding extra liquid may dilute the dish and the flavors. Just add in some more raw ingredients to increase the quantity of the dish being made. In this way you will be able to balance excess salt in your cooking. You can also add a little vinegar to the dish and it will have the same effect.

If you are making some specific dish like the meat loafs, then you can increase the quantity of ground beef or the Worcestershire sauce or the eggs, and there by balance excess salt, while keeping meat edible.

You can also throw in a small ball of flour dough into the cooking pot, as this will soak up the extra salt and balance excess salt in the dish. Just fish this dough ball before serving the food. Pasta and rice also has the same effect, but these might not be the best things to add to a dish that does not require them, as they will be tough to take out.

If you use something with a strong flavors of its own, you can beat and balance excess salt. Vinegar, sugar, veggies like carrots and tomatoes are some of the things you can use. This might change the flavor of the dish, but it is definitely a better option to throwing away the food, because you cant balance excess salt. It is best to cook your dish with as little salt as possible. You can always keep some salt in the bowl on the table, so that it can be added by your guests if they so desire.
