How Does Gastric Bypass Work

Though the word 'gastric bypass' is self-explanatory it might be interesting to know how gastric bypass works. It is estimated that over 200,000 gastric bypass surgeries were performed since 2008. The first laparoscopic Gastric bypass, Roux-en-Y was done in 1993. The procedure is mainly done for obese people with a higher BMI (body mass index) to help them diet and reduce intake. The procedure also significantly reduces heart diseases, diabetes and other obesity related illness.

Method of Surgery:

Gastric bypass surgery is to make the stomach smaller by stapling it and allowing the food to bypass straight to the small intestine. The technique is called laparoscopy wherein a small incision is made into which one sends a video camera and the other allowing operating instruments.

The gastric bypass surgery reduces the stomach by over 90%. When the patient ingests a small amount of food, the first response is a stretching of the wall stimulating the nerves, telling the brain the stomach is full even with a small quantity of food. The calories are reduced too. The food passes to small intestine where the nutrients and calories are absorbed; then proceed to the large intestine where waste is excreted. Most people return to normal activities in 3-5 weeks after a gastric bypass.

After  Gastric Bypass Surgery Precautions:

-Those undergoing the surgery have to consume few ounces of food at a time since the capacity of the stomach is small. Too much food may induce vomiting sensation.

-Chewing well is important to make the food easier to digest and absorb the nutrients.

-There won’t be room for water and food so water cannot be had before food, during and after food.

-Vitamins and supplements will have to be taken for the deficiency.

-Patients post-surgery should avoid any kind of sugary food or soft drinks as it is detrimental for the stomach and absorption of nutrients.

There might be other complications as with any other surgeries. It is best to discuss with your doctor what the best option is for you if you are battling with obesity related issues, cardio-vascular health or BMI.

It has been shown that Gastric Bypass Surgery has its advantages and is beneficial in reducing body weight and subsequently the associated illnesses. Statistics have shown that people who underwent this surgery have lost weight quickly over the next 12 months. Laparoscopic treatents showed similar results with 60-80% weight loss in patients over a period of 12-54 months.
