History of Chocolate Covered Anything Day

Many folks can’t wait for December 16th. Their reasons are very simple. It is one of those rare days, when they binge, pig out and indulge in the most sinful of temptations… chocolate! And yes, with Christmas just around the corner, the time couldn’t have been better!

On December 16th, known as Chocolate Covered Anything Day, we can go ahead and cover just about anything with chocolate… generous amounts of it too! How does the idea of spreading or pouring lots of chocolate on cakes, pies, pancakes and cupcakes sound to you? Wait... we should also count the nuts, the waffles and the ice creams. What fun, when there is no one to tell you how much is too much!

Quick History

In Minnesota, Swedish colonizers had come up with an idea of covering anything with chocolate, it was called fondue. They of course wanted to continue this tradition and keep it alive. It was then that a chocolate shop called Här är Chokladöverdragna Något, decided to celebrate a holiday dedicated to food, just before Christmas. The first Chocolate Covered Anything day happened in a small town in Minnesota. They had organised a delicious spread including chocolate dipped ham strips, which is known today as the chocolate covered bacon. They had chocolate covered pine cones, chocolate covered meatballs, and of course, chocolate covered Swedes, which is still a hot favorite world over.

Chocolate Delights

While there are people who believe in this story about the romantic origins of chocolate, others believe that some chocolatier or candy store owner made the whole thing up. The novelty of the idea just caught on and there we have it. A national food holiday. Whatever the reason is, I don’t think anyone is complaining. For most chocoloaholics, there could not have been a better dream. Happy National Chocolate Covered Anything Day, partners.
