You can see many diabetics having snacks at bedtime and this is done in order to maintain their blood sugar levels. Bedtime snacks for diabetics are important as it keeps the blood sugar level stable during the night. Snacks for diabetics at bedtime can avoid a condition known as hypoglycemic (low blood sugar level).

Fruits

Fruits are very good bedtime snacks for diabetics. Usually they are good source of vitamins and nutrients. Taking apple is the best choice for diabetics as it contains pectin which helps to detoxify the body. There are some fruits that can be added as snacks for diabetics, those are plums, pomegranate, pears and few blackberries, blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. On the other hand, certain fruits are not appropriate for diabetics that include mangos, oranges, grapes, bananas, and watermelons, as they are high in sugar content.

Protein essential for diabetics

Protein should be included in the bedtime snacks for diabetics.  They need protein to maintain the blood sugar level during the night. Soy and lentils are rich in protein and helps to keep the blood sugar level stable. Small portion of fish or even poultry can be served to them. Another protein rich snack idea is to have 2 tbsp of nuts at bedtime.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal is another good option, but should not be sweetened. It is a rich source of fiber, so would keep the blood sugar levels low. Body digests the oatmeal at a very slow rate; it’s in a way helps blood sugar levels.

Peanut butter

Peanut butter is a great source of protein and healthy fats. Diabetics can take peanut butter with carbohydrate like a slice of bread or with rice cakes. They can also combine peanut butter with fruits (that are allowed for diabetics), do not have the whole fruit; a small portion of the fruit would be good else it would lead to additional calories.

Diabetics should be very careful while taking bedtime snacks. Sugary products can elevate the blood sugar levels at night. So choose snacks that are rich in fiber and low in carbohydrate, this is the key to bedtime snacks for diabetics.
