Fatty fish and other marines have got lots of omega-3 fatty acids and we are now familiar that these fatty acids are very much important for our good health. A study has confirmed that men who consume fatty fish have reduced rate of heart failure.
The study was conducted on nearly 40,000 men between 1998 and 2004 by American and Swedish researchers where they found that those who ate fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring, whitefish and char for once a week were approximately 12% less likely to develop heart failure as compared to those who never ate fatty fish. The study also revealed that a moderate consumption (about 0.3 grams a day) of omega-3 fatty acids prevents them from developing heart failure as compared to less or no consumption of omega-3 fatty acids.
The study also revealed that one serving of fatty fish a week and moderate consumption of omega-3 fatty acid is good, but if someone starts taking it in high quantity, then instead of heart protection, he would be suffering from same risk of heart failure as the person who is taking less or no fatty fish.
This was an unexpected finding and may be due to chance, the researchers said. The reason behind this is yet to be explained. So, till then just follow the normal guideline of having fatty fish in moderate quantity and stay healthy.
