Causes Of Spoilage
Fungus and bacteria thrive on the sugars present in the ripe fruit and are major causes of spoilage.

Health Problems Caused By Rotten Mango
If water used to rinse mango is unclean, it increases risk of infection by salmonella bacteria. Severe diarrhea and vomiting which depletes the body of precious water, results in dehydration.
Aspergillus niger is the most common fungus that attacks mangoes. Inhaling large amounts of these spores causes a disease called aspergillosis. Chest pain and difficulty in breathing is observed.
E coli can spread to the fruit if hand wash has been insufficient. Depending on the severity of the infection, diarrhea with blood, nausea, vomiting and even fever is seen. Cramps that cause shooting pain are also common.

Brown and soft areas on the skin indicate damage.
A strong fermented odor means the fruit is past it's shelf life.
