Most of us must not be aware of what couscous actually is and how it tastes. Here in this article I will tell you about couscous and the health benefits of couscous. It is basically a grain food which is much like rice or pasta. It is the staple food of certain regions too. Alike pasta and rice, couscous can also be cooked in different styles and it can also be added to a variety of dishes and salads. It may also be used to cook side dishes at times.

Couscous is made using semolina grain. It can be prepared and sold in several different ways. It may be prepared and sold with or without any seasoning. It may be roasted in onion, oilive oil, or garlic. To lend it different flavors, it is even made with other types of wheat instead of semolina grain. Couscous is prepared in different ways in different regions of the globe. If you are in an area where couscous is not a staple, you can buy it from supermarkets or health stores. 

 

There are several health benefits of couscous. It is the healthiest of all the food products made from grain. Its vitamin content is much more as compared to pasta. It would not be wrong to say that couscous contains twice the quantity of niacin, vitamin B6, folic acid, and riboflavin in comparison to pasta. The content of thiamine as well as pantothenic acid is also more in couscous.

 

Couscous is a rich source of protein too. Every 100 calories of couscous offers about 3.6 gm proteins. The quantity of protein is similar to that of pasta but it definitely is more than rice. Additionally, it has low fat content than rice or pasta. So those who are looking for losing weight, you must eat couscous in place of rice or pasta.

 

Now, couscous is a great source of carbohydrates too. In case you are tired of preparing and eating regular grain staples including rice and pasta, you can cook couscous which will serve to be a healthy as well as a great alternative. Although its grain size is quite small, it is quite filling. The best part is that couscous does not contain any cholesterol.

 

Couscous can either be prepared on its own or it may even be prepared in combination with chicken, beef, pork, or even vegetables.
