Happy Birthday Whopper!
On December 6, 2007
The Whopper has turned 50! And while we typically don't celebrate foods that are loaded with calories and fat, this time we are making an exception (not that we suggest you drop everything and go eat one, either!).
The Whopper was created in 1957 by the founder of Burger King, James McLamore and originally sold for just 37 cents - and did you know that true to BK’s slogan, "have it your way" there are actually 221,184 possible ways for a customer to order a Whopper sandwich?
Take a look at this list of WHOPPERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD and see what looks tasty to you!
In Israel the "Garlic Whopper" has chopped garlic added,
Or, you can order the Whopper with roasted onions and mushrooms,
Or, the "Rodeo Whopper" which replaces the raw onion and ketchup with onion rings and barbecue sauce (also available in Argentina).
In Australia if you order the "Whopper with Egg", a fried egg is added to the sandwich,
Or, The "Aussie Burger"; a fried egg and beetroot are added to the sandwich!
In Japan the "Whopper Teriyaki" has teriyaki sauce instead of ketchup.
In Europe the "Angry Whopper" features pepper jack cheese, jalapeños and "Angry Onion Rings" ...
In the UK and Ireland the "Ultimate Double Whopper" - formally known as the "Extreme Whopper with Cheese" - features a double order of American cheese and 8 half-pieces of bacon!
In Sweden the "Dark Whopper" adds pepper jack cheese and "Black-Pepper Ketchup and Grill Sauce",
Or, the "Whopper Mexican" or "Mexican Whopper" has hot sauce and hot peppers instead of the mayo and pickles – which is also available in Mexico and Australia.
In the US, Canada and Australia the "Western Whopper" comes with BBQ sauce, Cheddar or American cheese and bacon. It is also available as a double and triple.
Even different US states have different Whoppers:
In Arizona, New Mexico and Texas the "Mustard Whopper" substitutes mustard for mayonnaise.
In California the "California Fresh Whopper" is made with a sour cream-onion dressing and cucumbers instead of pickles and mayo.
In the US and Canada you can get the "Bacon Swiss Whopper" (Swiss cheese and bacon are added ... obviously), or the "Fiesta Whopper" which has spicy sauce replacing the ketchup, pepper jack cheese and no pickles or the "Texas Double Whopper" which comes with Jalapeño peppers, bacon and mustard replacing the ketchup.
Mmm ... Is anyone's stomach rumbling?
