Acid reflux is a common ailment affecting many in this fast paced life. You can try to keep this at bay to a large extent by getting to know about foods that cause acid reflux. When the acid manages to flow back into your food pipe and sometimes reach the mouth, it causes a burning sensation. This is acid reflux. In severe cases acid reflux can cause damage to your food pipe with its corrosive nature.

Avoid Foods that Cause Acid Reflux

The first remedy that can be tried is to avoid foods causing acid reflux. This is easy if you know the foods that cause acid reflux in the first place. Given below are some of the foods that cause acid reflux whenever consumed.

  1. Soda – carbonated drinks cause acid reflux in 90% of the cases. The carbonation bubbles expand causing a reflux. Sodas that contain caffeine and are acidic in nature are the worst. Nevertheless, all carbonated drinks are foods that cause acid reflux and are best avoided.

  2. Alcohol – all alcoholic drinks are foods causing acid reflux. Beer, wine, liquor etc all contribute towards reflux of acid. Alcohol relaxes the stomach valve allowing acid to flow back into the food pipe.

  3. Caffeine – caffeine is one of the major foods that cause acid reflux. The favorite drink of many, one mug of coffee per day is not harmful but continued consumption throughout the day can lead to acid reflux.

  4. High Fat Meats – meats like beef, lamb and pork take longer time to be digested and thereby increase the chance of initiating acid reflux. Such foods that cause acid reflux can be replaced with healthier lean meats.

  5. High Fat Dairy Products – high fat content causes acid reflux whether in cheese or butter. Opt for the low fat variety and use them only as flavoring.

  6. Fried Food – is the most common food that causes acid reflux. Fried food is associated with chest pain occurring due to acid reflux.

  7. Chocolate – even if you love your chocolate, may be its time to let go since chocolate is one of the foods causing acid reflux to majority of people. Even though dark chocolate is not as high in fat content as milk chocolate, they are all bad for acid reflux.

Try and avoid these foods and see how your heart burn or acid reflux fares. Being aware of what you eat can help you and your health.
