Food and Depression – 8 Common Foods You Should Shun

Food and depression are quite related, there’s nothing new about that. But do you know that food and depression go and hand in hand when it comes to common food that we eat day in and day out ? Here’s a list from psychology enthusiast Rheyanne Weaver that’s going to catch you unawares:
• Sugar – Did you know that this innocent sweet tasting substance that steals our heart causes or enhances depression? I love sugar and I believe that most people like me who’ve got a sweet tooth will find it hard to leave an addiction. But believe me, this is true. When I feel a bit low, I gorge on sweet cakes, but later feel more depressed. Now I know the reason why.
• White Flour – This is one substance that’s going to soar your food and depression meter to great levels! Do you know most of our staple food stuff like burgers, pizzas, bread, tortillas, cakes etc. is made of white flour? It’s only recently that health scientists have discovered the drawbacks of this tasty flour and have recommended the usage of wheat flour instead. Try out that wheat loafs in the market. They taste good, are nutritious and will keep depression miles away.
• Alcohol – I know a peg of your favorite drink is going to work wonders when you are emotionally down, but just wait! It seems alcohol is a depressant and it causes insomnia in many cases. Also it contains a lot of lame calories. So, think twice before you take a sip.
• Caffeine – Search for a good coffee substitute, as this can raise your food and depression meter very high. Also soda is no good as it contains good amount of caffeine.
• Hydrogenated Fats - These are great for setting your food and depression meter to high levels. Potato chips, fast food, cookies and crackers are all tempting, but contain a high amount of hydrogenated fats. Now I understand why I like binging on potato chips when I feel low. In fact they are an addiction and I’ve put on a lot of weight because of them.
• Artificial Sweeteners, colorings and taste enhancers – They liven up food items well, but work in the opposite within your body.
• Fluoride- I was shocked when I read this! Do you know that your toothpaste which contains fluoride can contribute to your depression to a certain extent?
• Chloride – Did you ever guess that something like chloride, used for treating water, can actually cause depression?
After reading this list, you might have understood why most of us experience depression to some extent. If you’ve noticed the irony, most of the food substances that we like to consume work as depressants. These are substances that we use everyday and maybe we cannot do without some of them. The best we can do is to reduce the quantity of consumption.
