Food Fraud: Smoothie

A smoothie is considered to be a healthy option in comparison to other non nutritious desserts. However, it is time to awaken to the fact that it is actually a food fraud with a smoothie being no healthier than a cream and sugar laden ice cream.

A smoothie is often marketed with an eye on the health conscious who are swayed by promises of fresh fruits and natural sweeteners like honey being present within them.  Statistics also show that a smoothie is one of the fastest selling items in various cafes, restaurants and food bars across the United States of America.

The truth cannot be too far removed from the promotional campaign that is associated with the smoothie, however.  The ‘healthy berry’ that you eat happily is the biggest food fraud associated with a smoothie and you often get to devour them without having an inkling of that it could very well ruin your entire diet plan along with your general health.

For one, a smoothie can actually contain a whopping 80 to 90grams of sugar with no fruit whatsoever. But, why should  a fruit laden smoothie be bereft of fruit? Well, most companies simply add concentrates of fruit which contains preservatives and harmful additives more often than not.  Topping it up with whipped cream, sugar crystals and ice creams can actually make the smoothie akin to a thick milk shake which result in making you several pounds heavier as well.

It is therefore better to stay clear of the smoothie and ask for a fresh fruit juice, low fat yoghurt or a protein drink instead.
