Food Fraud: 2% milk

“Health food,” this is the magical phrase that ensures a food manufacturer of bigger sale. But for us consumers are these so called health foods really healthy! To make you all aware of the “Food Frauds” that our society is facing, I am starting a series of posts that will expose the bitter truth behind several of the foods that masquerade as healthy foods using labels such as diet food, low fat food, low sugar food, low cholesterol food, etc.

To kick start this series I begin by talking about the very popular 2% milk. As the name suggests, 2% milk, is cow’s milk with fat content reduced to just 2%. The reduced fat content obviously tempts many to choose this milk over the regular whole milk. However, there is more to it than what meets the eyes; let’s find out:

  Food facts:

Thus, as is evident through the table above, 2% milk contains more than 50% fats (both total and saturated) of whole milk, while reducing the taste and texture qualities by more than half of the whole milk. Thus, not giving any significant advantage over whole milk.

Healthy way out: Use skim milk instead of 2% milk. In case, you do not prefer the taste of skim milk then, mix 2% milk with skim milk for a few days, then with 1% milk, and gradually move over to skim milk only.
