Fish – the food that streamlines well being and health with our lifestyle – a treasure-trove of nutrients and well, a fort to prevent the entry of diseases related to the heart, depression,  and even cancer. Yes, the news that is streaming through, is "Fish oil can curb prostrate cancer".

Let’s see how. But before that, lets explore the fortifying attributes of  fish, which helps it to fight these diseases. Fish oil has the inherent property to bring down the levels of inflammation. This attribute comes into useful play, while curbing the growth of cancer cells.
What triggers the risk of cancer? There are many influencing factors associated with cancer but one of them is closely linked to inflammation. Some cell(s)  under chronic inflammation can eventually manifest into a condition called hyperplasia. Hyperplasia is a condition where degenerating cells multiply without any control to form tumors. Fish oil can curb the cancerous growth of cells by bringing down the inflammation degree of cells or making them less vulnerable to inflammation.
How can fish oil can curb prostrate cancer?
Fish oil is enriched with omega 3 fatty acids such as the EPA and the DHA.
Now,  in the fight against prostrate cancer, the hormone androgen plays a key role and ; also the omega 3 to omega 6 fatty acid ratio. Androgen triggers the growth of cancerous cells , and it was found that exposing the cancerous cells to omega 3 fatty acid curbed the growth of cancer whereas omega 6 had the reverse effect.
Research and results
The study recorded in the journal Clinical Cancer Research, showed the sampling with a diet of 1000 men, who were exposed to the risk of developing genetically-linked prostrate cancer. The sampled men, who included fish oil enriched with omega -3 fatty acids in their diet, showed a lower risk of developing genetic-manifestation type of prostrate cancer - proving that fish oil can curb prostrate cancer.
A study done in the year 2001 recorded in the “Urology” journal also showed that samples of prostrate tissues taken from men with prostrate cancer showed considerable improvement after they were put on an omega 3 fatty acid supplement.
Pointers about fish oil and diet  
One point to remember is, though your diet can be supplemented with adequate fish intake, you should watch out for the high – levels of toxicity due to mercury contamination and other chemicals.
And the Mayo clinic warns that the regular dietary intake shouldn’t include more than 3 gm serving of fish per day due to a high potential of bleeding.

The fish varieties rich in omega 3 fatty acids are Atlantic salmon, mackerel and herring.
