If you thought only the New Yorkers are looking for a quick greasy meal with some hot pastrami sandwiches and coleslaw, then you are so mistaken. New York deli food has found its way to places as far away as Dubai.

The trend of eating at Brooklyn diners have caught up in the middle east as well, and the New York Deli in Dubai is making headlines. The Brooklyn based Fine Diner chain has opened in the InterContinental Hotel in the growing metropolitan city of Dubai and they have everything from noodles to hotdogs. Most of the Jewish treats have undergone a name change, keeping in mind the reservations of the Muslim world. So challah is now known as egg bread.

It is indeed wonderful that the New York Deli cuisine has caught the fancy of international diners. This food is not only important to Jewish Americans but also to the USA as a whole. Here are a few historical back grounders for some of the New York Deli, so that you know the next time you order something off the menu.

  1. The word delicatessen (or delikatessen) is of German origin and it combines “delicious” or “delicacies” and eating. This makes sense since most of the American Jews are of German origin.
  2. Most people say that the Seltzer is a classic New York Deli drink because it is compliments the rich food and was also once known as Jewish champagne.
  3. The jews in New York created the pastrami, by flavoring and smoking corned beef. But the basics of the recipe was inspired by the South East European cooking done by Romanians, Bessarabians and Moldavians who were all ruled by the Turks.
  4. Though one cannot say with authority that this is the first Jewish New York Deli, Katz’s Delicatessen which was established in 1888 is known as the pastrami king and they serve mouthwatering deli food.
