We sometimes come across the term "Empty calories". What is that? Why is called empty?

Empty calories mean the large amount of calories present in high-energy foods that lack other considerable nutrients. Usually such foods lack in
vitamins, minerals, fibers etc.

Calorie (energy) is supplied by carbohydrates, fat and proteins. These are termed macro-nutrients. On the other hand, vitamins and minerals are called micro-nutrients (which do not supply energy, but are essential for nutrition). So, those food that are high in calories but lackes micro-nutrients are full of only calories, that is, empty calories.

Foods with empty calories:

Sweets, Soft drinks, beverages with a low juice component, and other foods containing sugar (such as candy).

Margarine or shortening.

Butter, lard, and other highly-saturated fats.
