This 34 year old actress/producer who shot to fame with her role as Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan in the TV series Bones is now gracing the cover of Fit Pregnancy magazine's September '11 issue. Emily Deschanel who has been a practicing vegan for a long time says that it isn't that difficult to maintain that vegan diet even through pregnancy. She revealed the details and I have the scoop!

Emily Deschanel's nutritionist Ashley Koff said (about Emily's diet), “Energy is a really significant issue for her. What has probably been a challenge for her is making sure that she has nutrient-dense food that she’s able to have every three hours.” She recommended Emily Deschanel hummus on a daily basis as it is a protein and a carbohydrate. But what were the words that came out of the horse's mouth? Emily Deschanel said, "I don't think it's any more challenging for me than for anyone else," she says. "The real challenge for a vegan is getting vitamin B12 and omega-3s, but you can get those in a vegetarian supplement. The funny thing is, I love kale and always used to put it in my breakfast shakes, but for some reason I can't stand it right now." Hmm, talk about pregnancy cravings and dislikes!

                               

But Ashley Koff makes sure that Our Lady of the Bones stays fed properly. The nutritionist said, “She loves nut butters, and sometimes we’ll do fun smoothies, especially if she’s at work. We’ll take coconut water, nut butter, and berries and make a smoothie so she’s got something to sustain her energy in a liquid form.” Ashley Koff's advise to Emily Deschanel was to avoid the highly-processed foods, especially now that she is pregnant. Koff said, “Whether you’re eating a plant- or animal-based diet, you want to eat food in the form closest to nature.”
                                

So what is the pregnant Emily Deschanel craving? Lemonade! She say that she just can't seem to get enough of it. And the only advice that she gives to expectant mothers is: "Trust your instincts.”
