Eggplants

Eggplant allergy is not a condition that makes you experience discomforting symptoms whenever you happen to ingest aubergine. The incidence of the allergy is particularly high in South Asians with about 11% being prone to it. However, the Americans are not particularly affected by it although cross reactivity with other kinds of food allergies may be observed periodically. It will be helpful to know the major causes and ways to avoid it in order to recognize the symptoms and deal with it effectively.

Reasons for Eggplant Allergy

The eggplant is a vegetable that often forms the basis of vegan and vegetarian food and remains a firm favorite of the people who are averse to eating flesh. However, this fruit-vegetable of the nightshade family contains histamine, a chemical that is responsible for several allergic symptoms. A specific protein based antibody known as IgE is formed when eggplant is ingested by allergic persons which then tries to remove the offending food from our bodies. Cross reactivity to other vegetables belonging to the same family may occur although it is not always the case. Tomato, potatoes, and tobacco are other members of the same group and you need to be careful while eating eggplants if you happen to be allergic to the aforementioned vegetables.

Eggplant Allergy Symptoms

  • Itching of the skin
  • Flushing of the face
  • Skin hives and eczema
  • Frequent bouts of sneezing
  • Shortness of breath and wheezing
  • A feeling of constriction in the throat
  • Inactive taste buds
  • Nausea and stomach ache

Diagnosing Eggplant Allergy

  • Blood Tests- The most effective way to diagnose the allergy is to take a blood sample and examine it for the presence of IgE.
  • Skin Prick Test- A small amount of the vegetable extract can be injectected under the skin and the reactions noted for indication of allergic reactions.
  • Cross Reactivity Tests- Allergies to other vegetables of the same family are checked before proceeding with the treatment.

Treating Eggplant Allergy Symptoms

  • The only way to avoid recurrence of the symptoms is to avoid the vegetable altogether. Gravies, stews and mixed vegetable items often contain aubergine which is a primary ingredient of the Greek delicacy moussaka as well.
  • The skin rashes can be successfully eliminated by using a topical skin ointment.
  • Nasal congestion and itchiness can be kept in control with the help of anti histamine drugs bought over the counter.
  • Asthma medicines also help to reduce the respiratory distress.
  • An Epi-pen is mandatory in cases of severe allergic reactions and is used to administer epinephrine shots urgently.

Eggplant allergy is not too difficult to control as the vegetable can be detected easily in cooked dishes. It is not a usual ingredient for pastes, sauces and condiments and avoiding the vegetable becomes simple if you have to steer clear of it.
