Do Muffins Contain More Salt Than A Packet Of Crisps?
The latest buzz amongst the health freaks and dieticians revolves around “Muffins” and the question “Do Muffins Contain More Salt Than A Packet Of Crisps?”. To many of us, the question may sound weird and unbelievable. But time of a reality check!! Recent studies, researches and surveys have proved that muffins do contain as much, if not more, salt that a packet of crisps.
Muffins versus Packet of crisps:
We normally tend to believe that anything sweet does not contain salt in it. But, with muffins, this rule does not apply. On the contrary, a hot drink with a piece of cake can contain as much as five packets of crisps. Research had proved that a fruit scone from Caffe Nero can contain as much as 2.1 grams of salt – the exact amount of salt present in McDonald’s Big Mac. A Caffe Nero hot chocolate along with a scone makes you consume a total amount 2.43 grams of salt – the amount that equals to five packets of crisps. Other similar high-salt contained bakery treats are McDonald’s Low Fat Blueberry Muffin (1.7g salt per portion), EAT. Chocolate Cookie (1.575g salt per portion), EAT. Muesli Cookie (1.575g salt per portion), Prêt A Manger Choc Bar (1.528g salt per portion), etc.
Harmful Effects of Salt:
While we all know the adverse effects of sugar and how high-sugar intake can affect our health and dietary balance, the adverse effects of salt are also immense. High sodium intake brings in the associated hazard of high blood pressure, which in turn increases the risk factor for heart disease and stroke. High salt intake also increases the water retention in our body, thereby making us feel bloated and sluggish. It also increases the possibility of osteoporosis in us. Thus, for various reasons, we should always keep a check on the amount of salt that we take in. We consciously would do that when it comes to salty foods. But, at the same time, the entire effort would be fruitless if we do not keep a watch on the salt that we consume through the bakery items like muffins and pastries.
Tips to Reduce Salt Intake:
So how do we avoid consuming salt? No, not by totally giving up good food and sacrificing our heart’s desire – not always. Quite contrary to this, all you need to do is, simply swap your choices with healthier versions of bakeries – just swap the salty foods with the less salty ones. For example, instead of muffins and pastries, go for cupcakes. Choose filter coffee or tea over a cup of Caffe Nero hot chocolate. Make conscious and healthier choices and ensure that you land up consuming lesser salt.
Thus, knowing all about muffins versus a packet of crisps is simply making yourself aware of a healthier lifestyle. Therefore, next time you are in a coffee shop, ordering some evening grabs for yourself, think carefully and choose rightly.
