Discovery Sees 'Green' With Emeril Series
Voluble TV chef Emeril Lagasse will kick it up a notch at Discovery Communications’ Planet Green, inking a deal to develop a new series for the eco-friendly startup.
Set to debut in July, the nightly Emeril Green will be shot on location at a Washington-area Whole Foods Market, the national supermarket chain that specializes in organic and minimally-processed produce, meats, seafood and dairy products.
As host of the new show, which will air Monday-Thursdays at 8 p.m., Lagasse will cook up healthy meals using fresh and in-season ingredients found in the Whole Foods aisles.
“Since my early days as a chef, I’ve always been passionate about using the freshest quality ingredients from farmers, fisherman and ranchers,” said Lagasse. “I try a little harder every day to think greener and be respectful of our environment and our resources. On Emeril Green we’ll unearth how easy and fun it is to cook with what’s fresh, tasty and in-season and find smart ways to make each day a little greener for you and your family.”
A spokesperson for the network said that while the show will present Whole Foods with an undeniably attractive opportunity to promote its brand and inventory, the grocer is not underwriting the series.
First announced at Discovery’s upfront presentation last spring, Planet Green will go live in June, replacing the 10-year-old Discovery Home.
Lagasse currently hosts Essence of Emeril for the Food Network. In December, Food announced that it would halt production on Emeril Live, which had been a linchpin of the network’s programming lineup for the better part of a decade. He joined Food in 1993.
Last week, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia scooped up the rights to the Lagasse portfolio of TV shows, cookbooks and kitchen products for $50 million in cash and stock.
