Cool Pickles

Van Holten's is turning pickles into one of America's most popular single serving snacks. Van Holten's invented the pickle-in-a-pouch, a masterful merchandising innovation that turned pickles into a popular, convenient food for people on the run. The Pickle-in-a pouch is the perfect snack because the individually packed pickles are crisp, crunchy, delicious and fat free.

Van Holten's Pickle-In-A-Pouch are the perfect snack on the run.  With five flavors and four sizes - including our characters, there is always a pickle to meet everyone's taste.  Our pickles require no refrigeration, have a two year shelf life and are a convenient fat free snack.

Character Line Flavors Include:
Big Papa (Hearty Dill)

Garlic Gus (Zesty Garlic)
Sour Sis (Tart & Tangy)

The legacy began in 1898 when Dutch immigrant J.G. Van Holten's dream of owning his own business became a reality in the growing metropolis of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Van Holten's began as a vinegar distributor and soon sauerkraut and pickles were added to the product line.
In 1939, Van Holten's discovered a market niche for individually wrapped pickles.  This packaging and product concept was way ahead of its time, which led to the birth of a masterful merchandising innovation... the Pickle-In-A-Pouch.
As the business grew so did the need for larger facilities, which in 1956 prompted the move to our current location in Waterloo, Wisconsin. Van Holten's continues to grow using the same formula of quality service, innovation, and passion that has made the company successful for over 108 years.

In 1992 seeing the company's potential for growth, Jim Byrnes, a Milwaukee based entrepreneur purchased Van Holten's. Our concentration since then has been on blending the innovation and passion that started so many years ago with a solid common sense business approach. We have focused on what we do best, the Pickle-In-A-Pouch, which is why we are the world's number one producer.
The drive to stay ahead of all competition has led to major improvements in the last five years. Van Holten's has installed two automated packaging lines and has just broken ground on a 53,000 square foot factory which will include state of the art production facilities, corporate offices, and warehousing. Our target for completion is May of 2007.

This is only tangentially related, but I was reading "The Wall-Mart Effect", because I am a book nerd, and they had a story how they got a contract with Vlasic to provide their Wal-Marts with those gallon pickle containers, and the success of it (80 jars, per store, per week!) ended up bankrupting the company! People need their pickles!

If you liked 'The Walmart Effect' you would also like The Corporation. They have a great story on Monsanto and how they were injecting Posilac in cows to boost milk production.
