Children and Safe Drinking Water
I am talking about water again, but this subject is not as frivolous as whether to drink bottled water or not. This is a very heart wrenching problem.
50% of the world's school age children do not have access to safe drinking water. Does that statement surprise you? I was astounded that the percentage was so high.
50% of all school age children do not have safe drinking water!!!
Responding to Mumbai Floods
UNESCO provided millions of liters of purified water after record floods in Mumbai. In total, more than 450 million liters of purified water have already been provided for emergencies around the world.
UNESCO provides drinking water for thousands of children world wide and for just two cents you and I can change the world. Four thousand children die needlessly every day from drinking contaminated water. Something most of us never give a thought to, but it'true and such a tragedy that hundreds of millions of people obtain their drinking water from polluted sources such as muddy rivers, ponds, and streams.
Collecting Water Hundreds of millions of people drink water contaminated with parasites, viruses, and bacteria that results in deadly diarrhea. This is easily preventable with simple, affordable, low-cost technology. Malawi Mother Gives Child First Safe Water This public health crisis can be addressed today through an innovative and low-cost technology that effectively purifies and cleans water while removing bacteria, viruses, and parasites. An old friend of mine, who has passed on, Mildred Mottahedeh donated money to various world charities and projects, but the one in Pune, India to set water purification systems in place for the first time - years ago taught me much of helping others. She lived modestly in an apartment in NYC near the UB building while donating her millions to charity causes. Now granted we don't have her wealth, but collectively we can make a major contribution to this crisis affecting the children of the world. I was fortunate to know Mildred, an amazing woman, and "sit at her feet" and learn of many things in our industry and of life. You may know of her from her contribution to help build the magnificient Baha'i Lotus Temple in Delhi, but every time I see photographs of children drinking from poluted water I think of her and the gift of clean water to the children of Pune. Simple Steps to Prepare Clean Drinking Water After adding a packet of the powdered technology, stirring for 5 mins and then letting it rest for 5 mins, this boy in Uganda pours the water through a clean cloth to filter out dirt and contaminants.
How can you and I help?

The Baha’i Temple in Delhi, India, is one of the city’s most distinctive landmarks. Popularly known as the Lotus Temple, it is built of white marble in the shape of a half-opened lotus flower. Baha’i is a nondenominational religious faith founded in the late 19th century. The world’s largest Baha’i community is found in India, where about 2 million people adhere to the faith. Social aims based in the principles of the Baha’i faith include the abolition of racial and religious prejudice.
FYI- I do not work for UNESCO and am not of the Baha'i faith, but I am a citizen of the global village. - Shanti |
