Binge eating - unusual quantity of food consumed in a short span of timeBinge eating is one of those disorders which you can treat yourself. It is an illness which can be overcome with determination and willingness. It is an eating disorder in which a person consumes unusually large quantities of food – over eating or binge eating as we know it is often done in secrecy.

If you suffer from such an eating disorder you must be embarrassed about such a condition and willing to stop yourself. If you have the desire and the willingness in you – you will be able to treat yourself without any professional help. This is one of the most common disorders we know which needs to be controlled as soon as possible. If you wish to treat your binge eating yourself, here are some things which you can do.

No diet: If you are aware that you are suffering from such an illness, you have to make sure that you avoid dieting. Diet restriction is known to trigger binge episodes which in turn lead to a vicious circle which might become very hard to break.

Meals on time: If you wish to treat your binge eating problems you have to ensure that you are eating your meals on time. Do not skip breakfast as if you do so, you will soon start feeling hungry and then you will tend to over eat. Have your lunch and dinner on time. It is best to have some fruits or healthy foods in between meals so that you do not feel hungry – an empty stomach disturbs the psychological balance which leads to binge eating. It is better to eat nutritious food than gorging great quantity of food later on.

Food stock: Think about the stocks of food you have at home – chocolates, pastries, candies, snacks! If you have binge eating problems you have to ensure that you stock up less food at home – Avoid storing junk food at home if you have binge eating disorderespecially junk food. When you are aware that there is food at home, you will feel the urge to eat it even when you are not hungry. It will slowly stop your temptation to eat. You have to deprive yourself for the time being to treat yourself.

Throw food which you love: I have noticed that every person who binges has his own favorite food which he loves to gorge! You too must be having your own loved food which you are ready to have at anytime of the day. You have to remove all such food from your home– if you don’t have access to it you won’t eat it.

Record your feelings: This works as a great treatment. This is what your psychologist will do when you seek professional help. Your doctor will let you speak so that your feelings and weaknesses are revealed. You can do just the same to treat yourself. You have to record all your feelings in a diary – how you are feeling before bingeing and after bingeing. It shall help you to narrow down your phases of bingeing, because when you read your diary later on, you will realize your mistake.

Relax and divert your attention from binge eating by listening good musicRelax: You have to look for different ways on how to stay relaxed so that you stop thinking about food.
• Listen to music.
• Watch hilarious movies.
• Meditate or go for long walks.
• Spend time with children.
• Stay connected with family and friends.

Last but not the least – you have to think positive and believe in yourself. You have to make your mind and heart believe that you will be able to overcome your eating disorder problem and return to normal life soon.

From one person with this disorder to any others who may be reading this: binge-eating cannot be licked by willpower alone. It goes beyond that, it's deeper and more complex, and the biggest thing is that you CAN'T DO IT ALONE. I know that's hard to hear, because of the shame that goes with this disorder we don't want to admit that we're unable to do anything, but it's true. The evidence is there in the history of being unable to stop obsessing over food and handle it in a reasonable way. Really, you shouldn't try to cure yourself alone. Go to an Overeaters Anonymous meeting sometime, and see what it does for you.
