Breakfasts From Around The World
Someone has truly said - 'breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dine like a pauper'. Some people don’t want to waste their precious time in having a breakfast and often skip it. But do you know even a traditional cooking can become innovative and present an enjoyable morning meal. Here are some of the breakfasts from around the world that you can make and enjoy at your breakfast table too.
America: Americans eat an unusually large collection of foods, including eggs, cereal, bread or baked goods, sausage or bacon, fruit juices, tea, coffee, milk and hot cocoa in their breakfasts. Children all over the country love pancakes with maple syrup. American breakfast table sometimes has culinary imports like scrapple – a mixture of cornmeal, herbs and pork scraps that are pressed into mold, cut into slices and fried before serving. Butter or red-eye gravy, biscuits made with lard; a thick slice of country ham, crisp, fried hash brown potatoes are some of the other popular American meals.
Central America: Chocolate beverages are quite popular in Central America, as this region is the biggest producer of chocolate in the world. The drinks are quite thicker and frothier compared to their American counterparts with flavors like cinnamon. Fruit juices are also part of their breakfast meals. Besides, they like eating egg dishes, tortillas, pan dulce (sweet bread), chorizo and other sausages, fresh fruit and fried plantains.
South America: South Americans eat bread of pan dulce (sweet bread) with just one cup of coffee and plenty of milk in the breakfast. Other popular breakfast items are small croissants called Medialunas, which can either be sweet or plain. Argentines love bittersweet chocolate bar melted into a glass of steamed milk as a breakfast beverage. Bolivians eat small oval pastries called salteñas, which is filled with stuffing like peas, potatoes, hard-boiled eggs, olives, raisins and sometimes with meats.
Italy, France & Spain: Italians and Frenchmen usually have Continental breakfast where morning meal includes a cup of coffee like cappuccino, caffe nero, tè, latte al cacao or café au lait depending on the region with a slice of bread with butter, brioche or a croissant. No breakfast meal is finished without seafood in Spain because the country is surrounded by water. Spaniards eat Churros or warm fritters with hot chocolate dipping as part of their breakfast.
Australia & United Kingdom: Bacon, eggs, toasts with butter or jam is quite a common breakfast menu item in Australia as well as England. English people also like sausages, mutton chops, grilled kidneys, tomatoes, mushrooms, oatmeal, various smoked fish and variety of egg preparations. Tea and coffee are the two drinks that are usually taken as beverages. You may also find a dish made of rice, spices and lentils along with smoked eggs, haddock and cream on an English Breakfast table. Australians are different from English people only when they present some idiosyncratic food combinations like spaghetti, baked beans or bacon as toppings on toast.
India: India presents a great variety of cuisine depending on its regions. Northern Indian food focuses on paratha breads, either stuffed with spicy veggies or plain, often eaten with sweetened milk or yogurt. Rice noodles with sweet coconut milk, or small steamed cakes made with a lightly fermented batter of rice are some of the south Indian recipes that can give a filling start to the day. Tea is mostly preferred in North India, while coffee is quite popular in the South.
China & Japan: Rice and seafood are the staple breakfast meal of these two East Asian nations - China and Japan. Natto, fermented soybeans, is a popular breakfast meal at Japanese table, while Chinese love eating congee – a watery cross between porridge and gruel. Chinese also eat pickled mushroom stem and golden-fried dough during breakfasts.
