Big Y drops Imus items
SPRINGFIELD - Big Y Foods is pulling Imus Ranch Foods products from its supermarket shelves in the wake of radio shock-jock Don Imus' remarks about the Rutgers University women's basketball team.
Claire M. D'Amour-Daley, vice president of corporate relations, said yesterday that all 56 Big Y supermarkets have removed or are in the process of removing Imus Ranch salad dressing, the only Imus Ranch Foods product Big Y still carries.
The company recently stopped carrying Imus salsa and coffee because they weren't selling, she said.
"We have discontinued his salad dressing, based on recent issues, just because I think it's been offensive to our customers, and it's the right thing to do now," she said.
Imus sparked a firestorm of criticism, including calls that he be fired from his nationally syndicated morning radio show on WFAN in New York, last week while talking about the Rutgers' women's basketball team.
The team, which rode an improbable season to the women's NCAA championship game, had lost to the University of Tennessee the night before.
Imus called the players "nappy-headed hos." CBS, which syndicates Imus' show, has suspended Imus for two weeks beginning Monday, but many critics contend the racist and sexist remark, combined with a history of making such comments, justifies firing Imus.
