Ban Pizza, Fight Crime!

Jim Graham, a Washington D.C. councilman, has an unusual proposal to fight crime in his neighborhood. He wants to ban the late night sale of single slice pizzas!

Graham feels that the “Jumbo Slice” pizza shacks operating on the popular Adams Morgan club and bar strip in Ward 1 attract the unsocial elements that are likely to commit crime and often have fights breaking out in and outside the joint.

In Graham’s own words - ‘Even though it’s a legal business and everything, they have become a nuisance. Behaving the way they do in terms of music, in terms of letting people hang out and also in terms of tolerating a certain level of violence’.

Needless to say pizza joint owners are not too happy about it. Though a recent hidden camera exposé done by WJLA-TV showed a recent fight that started just outside a pizza joint; most of the residents and party goers have ridiculed Graham’s proposition.

All this makes me wonder, when one fails to control the public elements that really do commit nuisance pizza or no pizza, is this the best solution that council men and the government can come up with? First, blame the moon for all the loony-ness, then alcohol and now…pizza. Where will this farce end??
