Baby MilkThe balanced diet for baby is totally different from the balanced diet for any adult person. Foods with high fat and low fiber content are most important constituents of balanced diet for a baby. Initially the baby is dependent only on mother’s milk, which is just the right food containing all essential nutrients for this particular stage. However, after first 3-4 months, the baby needs to be introduced with different types of foods starting with starchy foods. Fiber is difficult to digest for the baby, so all fiber foods should wait until the digestive system gets enough matured.

Starch and Carbohydrate-rich Foods

The baby should be slowly introduced to starch and carbohydrates during her 3rd or 4th month. Starting with rice cereal, gradually the baby should get acquainted with wheat cereal, potatoes, pasta etc. Only a small quantity of food should be fed to the babies at a time for better digestion.

 

Fruits and Vegetables

Once the baby gets habituated with starch and carbs, fruits and vegetables in smaller quantity should be started. These are the best foods to supply essential vitamins, minerals and other phyto-nutrients, which help in growth and build up immune system. By the age of 6 month, each meal should contain a serving of fruit or vegetable.

 

Dairy Products

Fat is one of the most essential requirements for the balanced diet of a baby. So, dairy products like milk and milk-based items which are rich in fat should be continued, at least for the first few years. On the other hand, dairy products like cheese and yogurt are good source of natural proteins, calcium and other useful nutrients.

 

Protein-rich Foods

One should wait for at least 6 months of age to include protein-rich foods in her baby’s diet. Protein is again difficult to digest at the beginning. So, it is better to start with vegetarian protein before introducing meat or fish. However, once you start it should be served at least in the major meals to satisfy the requirement.

 

One of the most important factors of balanced diet for baby is to introduce your baby with a variety of foods, slowly but consistently. Only a wide variety of food can ensure good health and continuous growth for a baby.
