Australian National foods have their roots in the cuisine of Great Britain and continue to be the traditional dishes of the country.

Meat Pies with mash and peas. The Australian meat pie is a hand-sized meat pie containing a filling of diced or minced meat and gravy, sometimes with onion, mushrooms, or cheese. Similar to the steak pies of the United Kingdom's, they are available at most fast food outlets, takeaways and local bakeries. You can get a variety of meat pies, from chicken curry to kangaroo. Gourmet meat pies are also available.
Fish and chips is a popular take-away food that originated in the United Kingdom in 1858 or 1863. In Australia, it typically consists of battered or bread crumbed flake, haddock or plaice which is deep-fried and accompanied by deep-fried potato chips. Batter fried king size shrimp or prays are also very popular in Australia.
Roast lamb, mutton or hogget or Lamb's Fry and Bacon also feature as Australia’s national dishes. While roasts are prepared on traditional holidays, Lambs fry and bacon is a popular breakfast and pub dish.
Kangaroo fillets, steaks, minced meat and 'kanga bangas' or kangaroo sausages served with mash and apples.
Vegemite is a dark brown Australian food paste made from yeast extract. It is a popular breakfast food, spread toast, sandwiches and crumpets and often used as a filling for pastries. It is similar to British, Marmite.
Lamington - a sponge cake cube coated in a layer chocolate icing and dusted with desiccated coconut. They are sometimes served as two halves with a layer of cream and/or strawberry jam between.
Pavlova a meringue-based dessert named after Anna Pavlova, the Russian ballet dancer. The dessert is believed to have been created in honor of the dancer during one of her tours to Australia and New Zealand in the 1920s. The dessert is a considered an Australian national food and is frequently served during holiday meals.
ANZAC biscuits are popular in Australia and are sweet biscuits cantain rolled oats, desiccated coconut and golden syrup. Anzac biscuits are associated with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) established in World War I.
Damper is a traditional Australian soda bread prepared by swagmen, drovers and stockmen. It is a wheat flour bread, baked in the coals of a campfire, similar to the Bush bread made by Australian Aborigines. Damper was eaten with dried or cooked meat or golden syrup, also known as "cocky's joy."
These are some of the most popular Australian National foods however today, Australia’s cuisine is greatly influenced by other world cuisines of South East Asia, Mediterranean, and Europe, which are an integral part of the Modern Australian cuisine.
