•    Safflower, sunflower oil, plant oils and corn: These foods are rich in omega 6 fatty acids which can worsen the symptoms of arthritis. Instead, oils rich in omega 3 fatty acids and monounsaturated fats are more beneficial.

•    Nightshade vegetables: Potatoes, peppers, eggplants, tomatoes and tobacco are the nightshade or the solanine –rich plants. One-third of those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis show sensitivity to this pigment and therefore these are arthritis diet foods to avoid.

•    Caffeine: Some foods avoided in arthritis diet can provide relief from the symptoms. Caffeine is one of them. Intake of caffeine affects the absorption of calcium, which is very vital for bone-health and whose deficiency can lead to bone-mass loss and disease-manifestations such as arthritis.

•    Sugar and salt: As mentioned, sugar affects the absorption of other nutrients and also, it is believed that sugar hampers the capability of the body’s immune system, specifically the T-type cells, which fight infections. Salt also interferes with the absorption of calcium.

•    Citrus fruits: Citrus fruits such as orange and lemon can aggravate arthritis inflammation and is therefore an arthritis diet food to avoid. The high acidity content of citrus fruits can play havoc with the swelling in the joints.
