An Egg Breakfast Helps Promote Weight Loss

Just the other day was going through an article an interesting piece of information that might also help many of us..go on...

In a randomized controlled trial, 160 overweight or obese men and women were divided into 2 groups, one of which ate a breakfast including 2 eggs, while the other consumed a bagel breakfast supplying the same amount of calories and weight mass (an important control factor in satiety and weight loss studies). Participants ate their assigned breakfast at least 5 days a week for 8 weeks as part of a low-fat diet with a 1,000 calorie deficit. (Dhurandhar N, Vander Wal J, et al, FASEB Journal)

Compared to those on the bagel breakfast, egg eaters:

  • Lost almost twice as much weight -- egg eaters lost an average of 6.0 pounds compared to bagel eaters' 3.5 pound loss.
  • Had an 83% greater decrease in waist circumference
  • Reported greater improvements in energy

No significant differences were seen between blood levels of total, HDL and LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides in either group, confirming what other studies (Ballesteros MN, Cabrera RM, Am J Clin Nutr) have shown, including a relative risk study presented at the Experimental Biology meeting: healthy people can safely enjoy eggs without increasing their heart attack risk. The relative risk study, a thorough scientific review of the major studies concerning heart disease causation, which was conducted by Washington, DC-based scientific consulting firm, Exponent, found that eggs contribute just 0.6 percent of men's and 0.4 percent of women's coronary heart disease risk.

It is the protein and lowfat that makes this work! That is what weight watcher's program is all about. MUST HAVE breakfast! I had two poached eggs this AM for breakfast. Yesterday I had a veggie Eggbeaters omelette. Very good for you breakfast, and of course coffee. Mid morning snack I add 8 oz. fat free milk to 1" of coffee. Very good as it turns to carbs and makes you not hungry. Sometimes I eat a banana or tangerine mid afternoon. 6 servings of vegetables or fruit every day. 3 oz meat/fish chicken once a day. Whole grains such as quinoa or brown rice are good too. Two servings dairy such as fat free yogurt/curd, fat free cottage cheese, or fat free milk all are good. If one follows this healthy approach you will be healthier and loose weight. Of course exercise! Shanti/Mary-Anne

Wonder if Eggbeater types were used. Those are the eggwhites sans yolks. I love them for veggie omelettes at breakfast. Shanti/Mary-Anne

Nisha thanks for the kind remarks :) Well 3.5 pounds vs 6 pounds ie a 2.5 pounds difference in 8 weeks ie about 1.25 pounds difference in weight in a month. Daily differences in weight can show up almost similar quantum of weight changes. Even diuretic tablets taken for 2-4 days will show up more change in weight. A 1000 calorie deficit is quite significant. Most safe diet plans advise in the range of 500 calories. A 1000 calorie deficit will make a very difficult to get required amount of protien, vitamins and minerals from diet alone. A bagel breakfast (whatever that means) Im assuming that eating approx 2 bagels would give approx 200-300 calories from mainly flour (aka maida) contributing little towards the to the already starved body. I suspect any type of protein be it dal, or tandori chicken will have the same effect. Remember protein , vitamins and minerals are required by the body to maintain existing muscle mass. I wonder if a egg lunch and a high protein breakfast but not consisting of eggs will have similar effect:)?!!

Hey Pervez87, I think you are right, any low carb/high protein brekky should have the same effect. It helps to control insulin resistence and level out crazy blood sugar levels.
