Indian Fast FoodVaddas and Dose

Vaddas are savory donuts deep fried and served with sambar & chutney. Yum! Masala Dose (pron. DOSA) is a rice-flour pancake stuffed with a veggie malasa and rolled burrito style with plenty of ghee.

Frankies

A fast food treat started in Mumbai but now in most urban cities, Frankie’s are heated chapatis with beaten egg poured on top crepe style and cooked, then filled with your choice of meat or veggie masala. They're Bombay's answer to vendor hotdogs.

Kesari Bath

Not for recent by-pass patients, Kesari Bath is similar to bread pudding soaked in melted butter. It's semolina, cashews, raisins (or other fruit/nut combos) cardamom, sugar & enough ghee (clarified butter) to lube Parisian pastry brushes for a year.

Chaat

Bhel, Dai, or Pani Puri, Chaat is a must for anyone visiting the Sub-continent. For the real experience try Pani Puri, a sweet & sour, hot & spicy mix of Puri stuffed with potatoes& beans soaking in pani water. Fair warning, keep the Cipro handy.

Local Produce

Some of the freshest and best tasting fruits and vegetables, favorites are Custard Apples, Mangosteens, Jackfruit, Tender Coconut and DrumSticks.

Drinks

Can't mention food without drink, try Old Monk Spiced rum straight up or with Thumbs Up cola. King Fisher Beer is refreshing and cheap. For the more adventurous there are a number of local brews available like Goan Cashew Feni.

This is a very well written list of most popular Indian dishes. Frankies are very popular in New York too, there are over 10 frankie places in Manhattan and every month a new one pops up. Of course dosa man Thiru is the best food vendor of NY. Watch him atĀ  http://www.ifood.tv/?q=node/1189. He is totally loved by folks at New York University. Frankie and quick dosa have made Indian dish appealing to American mainstream and removed the misunderstanding about "too spicy" and "too elaborate". Great job Moody Foody.
