10 Holi Foods You Should Avoid For Health Reasons

While many of us know Holi better as a festival of colors, it also includes numerous traditional foods that are made across the country. However, a few foods that will allow you to make merry on this day can also take a toll on your health, so just keep them at bay and avoid them, sticking to the healthier options instead.

 

Foods You Should Avoid For Health Reasons

1. Saffron Syrup 

If consumed in large amounts Saffron syrup is intoxicating and therefore, should be avoided. This is usually a cold drink and uses higher amounts of saffron, which causes intoxication.

 

2. Puran Poli 

Though, made from healthy lentils, Puran Polis are deep-fried and are therefore, not a good dish for those who are trying to curb on calories and cardiac ailments.

 

3. Bhang! 

Say a big NO! No other Holi food could contain more intoxicating drink that could take a toll on your health, as this drink is made of cannabis, spices, ghee and milk.

 

4. Thandai

This is another intoxicating drink that is made of poppy seeds, aniseeds, rose petals, black peppercorns, and buds and leaves of cannabis that could bring a surge on your blood pressure and has an impact on your nervous system as well. Apart from these, the use of spices, ghee and milk could add to your woes.

 

5. Kanji Ke Vade

An intoxicating snack that is made from fermented split black lentils (urad dal) soaked in Mustard (rai), which is responsible for the intoxicating effect. Moreover, the vadas (lentil dumplings) are deep fried in mustard oil adding a large number of calories to your daily diet. 

 

6. Gujjia

This is a sweet dish, which is not fit for diabetic patients and those with cardiac ailments. For diet watchers, they are the best judge.

 

7. Besan burfi

This is a rich sweet dish that is made of besan flour and is rich in fat and sugar. Enough ingredients to make a diet watcher hide away in a corner. 

 

8. Boondi Ka Laddoo

Though, these sweet ball look delectable, it is a complete no for diabetics. Moreover, it is rich in fat due to the large amounts of ghee or dalda that is used. So, people following a healthy heart diet need to avoid it too. 

 

9. Khasta dal Kachori

This delctable and succulent snack is made from refined flour, clarified butter, and spices. It is a deep fried snack - enough ingredients to shock your poor heart into unhealthy terrains!

 

10. Onion Bhajiya

Made from the healthy gram flour and beneficial onion, these crispy snacks are sure to enliven your celebrations. However, they are not quite as healthy as they look for the deep frying process makes the bhajiyas soak in the oil in excess which could lead to complications if you have a sensitive stomach. 

 

Try substituting these dishes with more healthy preparations, you will still not miss the fun!
